Since I'm a GameDev.net forum member for a long time, this may sound like I'm bias to that site, but thats not the case. The GameDev.net is one most known sites in the Game Development industry.
it has a great collection of articles/news/reviews on game developments. but most importantly ...... its forums.
For Beginners - GameDev.Net Discussion Forums : here, you can ask anything from "how to start", "which books to buy", "what degree major benefit what job in the industry" to "where can I find info on ...".
they are vary helpful ! I know the moderator "Fruny" too, and he is quite knowledgeable (if he was in a good mood that is!).
BE SURE to read the sticky posts first as you may find that your question is already answered there.
also you can check the rest of the forums. There are forums for "Java""C++" "DirectX" "Math and Physics" "Writing for Games" "Visual Arts " "Music and Sound " ..... and a lot more!
